But as with all such major home improvements, there’s a lot to take into consideration before getting busy and breaking ground.
Deciding on an Extension Type
One of the most popular and accessible ways of extending a bungalow is to organise a professional loft conversion. This transforms what may at present be a rather dusty and uninspiring storage area into an exceptional living space for any and all purposes. The bonus of a loft conversion is the way in which no structural changes or additions are necessary, which can in turn keep costs to a minimum.
If looking to go about a full-scale extension however, it’s case of deciding whether you’d like to add an extra room or living space onto the property, or simple make an existing living space or spaces larger.
In the case of the former of the two, the extension takes the form of an externally built room that’s then connected to the adjoining room by a simple door. In essence, it can be a bit like building a conservatory on the side or back of the home, rather than extending the home in a traditional sense.
Traditional extensions on the other hand involve increasing the size of the property by building something of an annex that becomes a fully integral part of the home, as opposed to a simple connected room. Needless to say, the demolition and construction demands of this type of extension can be much more severe, as too can the costs.
Bungalow Extension Building Regulations
Extensions are permitted developments, provided that you meet conditions set by the planning department. For all home extensions, you must still get building regulation approval. As an example, the following projects would need building regulation approval:
- Home extensions such as for a kitchen or bathroom
- Loft conversions – internal structural alterations, such as the removal of a load-bearing wall.
- Installing baths, showers which will involve drainage or waste plumbing.
- Installing new heating appliances.
- New chimneys.
What to Consider when it comes to extending your bungalow
A bungalow extension isn’t the kind of home improvement that’s ever approached lightly, thought there are certain considerations that must take precedence over others.
Up or Out – Will you choose to extend up into the attic, build a new upper-floor or make use of exterior space with an external extension?
Budget – How much money do you have available for the project?
Utilities – Do you intend to connect the new room up to the home’s water, gas and/or electricity supplies?
Planning Permission – Are you even allowed to go about an extension in the first place and do you have planning permission?
Property Values – What kind of extension would add the most value to your property as a whole?
